About

Inspired by a desire to create a series of images that mimic the sensory and visual cues that inform recollection — that of which is both highly personal but also true to experience — Meike Bertrand-Paniza’s images embody a sense of losing one’s surroundings. Although these photographs were shot in Alaska (Between Land and Sky, 2014-) and California (Something Cosmic, 2018-), they deliberately avoid being grounded to a specific location. The fragmentary views are both elusive and weightless, offering no more than a poetic pause or glimpse of temporal and physical space.

Biography

Meike, originally from The Netherlands, currently lives Los Angeles. She studied at The Savannah College of Art and Design where she earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Photography in 2017. In the past few years her photographs have been included in the All Alaska Biennial at the Anchorage Museum Rasmussen Center in Alaska, the Mt. Rokko International Photography Festival in Kobe, Japan and Punctum: Photographic Center North-West's 20th Annual Photography Exhibition, where her diptych Sparks was honored with the first place award.

Prints & Books

Works are exhibited both individually and as compositions of multiple images combined. Prints are individually made by the artist using archival inks and papers of varied presses and weights; each choice rendering a a specific desired result. All prints and books are made in limited editions, signed and numbered.

Photographs  from the series Between Land and Sky were included in a hand made artist book in 2017, printed on Japanese Washi paper in an edition of 25.
